Hello, everyone! Have you heard of a bird called the “Fairy Pitta” ? It’s a very colorful and beautiful little creature.”
The Fairy Pitta is about 18 cm long, slightly bigger than a sparrow and around the size of a starling. Its vivid feathers feature bright reds, greens, blues, and yellows, with a striking blue accent at the tip of its tail. Its Japanese name “Yairo” (literally “eight colors”) comes from the combination of multiple primary colors. Interestingly, its scientific name even includes the meaning of “nymph” or “fairy”—how lovely is that?

In Japan, it visits mountain regions from central Honshu to Kyushu only during the summer months, from May to July, to raise its young. It’s especially common in Kochi Prefecture, where it has even been designated as the official prefectural bird!
Seeing a Fairy Pitta is a rare and precious experience. The species is endangered in Japan and known as a “phantom bird.” If you happen to spot one, please watch quietly and respectfully. Until next time!
