Hello, everyone! Do you know what happens from May 10 to 16? Actually, it’s Japan’s “Bird Week”! Also known as “Bird Week” in English, it’s a time to pay attention to wild birds and think about coexisting with nature.

What’s interesting is the reason this time of year was chosen. It all started in the U.S. with “Bird Day” in 1894, which was set for May 4. Inspired by this idea of cherishing birds, Japan designated April 10 as “Bird-Loving Day” in 1947. However, even though it’s technically spring, April still has a lot of cold days—sometimes even lingering snow in northern areas. So birds weren’t very active at that time.
That’s why they decided, “Let’s choose a time when it’s easier to see birds!” And from 1950 onward, Bird Week was moved to the current dates of May 10–16. It’s the perfect season—lush greenery, lively birdsong, and great conditions for birdwatching!
During this week, schools and parks often host fun events like birdwatching sessions and art contests. If you take a walk in the park and pay attention, you’ll likely spot sparrows or white-eyes—and if you’re lucky, maybe even a kingfisher! So why not take a moment to look up at the sky during Bird Week? You might just find that everyday life feels a little richer. See you next time!
