Have you heard of the Oriental Greenfinch? This small bird holds many surprising secrets. Let’s introduce some of its charm!
The Oriental Greenfinch is about the size of a sparrow, approximately 14 cm in length, and has a soft yellow-brown color. However, its features are not limited to its color. It has a thick beak, perfect for cracking hard-shelled seeds. Though its appearance may seem plain, a closer look reveals a pink beak, a striking yellow band visible during flight, and a delicate beauty.Additionally, the tips of the tail feathers are split into two, resembling the shape of a fish’s tail!

Commonly seen by riverbanks, it favors seeds like millet and Japanese barnyard millet. Another distinctive feature is its call, which sounds like “kiriri, kororo” and a unique warble like “chonchonjuuin.” Despite its small size, it produces a rich variety of sounds. Its call is similar to those of the Japanese White-eye and the Eurasian Blackcap but has unique characteristics that make it identifiable.
Interestingly, the Oriental Greenfinch feeds its chicks seeds, unlike most small birds, which typically feed their chicks insects. This is due to the development of a special organ called the “crop”!
The Oriental Greenfinch, with all its charm, is often overlooked in our busy lives. However, if you pause to look up at the sky, you might discover their small world unfolding. Next time you’re outdoors, take a moment to look around. You might just catch a glimpse of the fascinating world of the Oriental Greenfinch.
