Hello, readers of Torimame. Today, let’s talk about the ‘Little Gull,’ a bird with an almost mythical charm. As its name suggests, the Little Gull is a small, adorable seagull.
The Little Gull, measuring about 25 to 30 cm in length, ranks among the smallest of seagulls. In comparison to the Black-headed Gull, it is about half the size. It’s roughly the size of a Brown-eared Bulbul, and you might be surprised by its small stature when you picture it. It has a white head with grey-black spots, a light grey back, and its chest, belly, tail feathers, and primary wing feathers are white, adding to its cuteness. The thin black beak and short salmon-pink legs also enhance its adorable appearance.

What’s astounding is its rarity. Since the first domestic record in Hokkaido in 1980, there have been only a few records in Japan, making it a truly ‘phantom bird.’ Its distribution spans from the northern parts of the Eurasian continent to the western Siberian plains and the eastern side of Lake Baikal. During the winter, it can be found in the Mediterranean region, the Sea of Japan area, and along the coasts of eastern North America, but it rarely appears in Japan.
Sightings of the Little Gull are extremely rare, but its tiny and adorable look instantly captivates anyone who sees it. If you encounter this small gull, it’s like stepping into a scene from a picture book, making your day special. Next time you visit the seaside, keep an eye out for the Little Gull. Who knows, you might be lucky enough to meet this enchanting bird.
