Hello, everyone! Have you heard of the rock ptarmigan? It lives only in high-altitude mountains, turns pure white in winter and speckled in summer, and is designated as a Special Natural Monument of Japan. Spotting one in the mountains always brings a little joy. But lately, their numbers have been decreasing due to climate change and natural predators, which is quite worrying.

That’s why the Shinano Mainichi Shimbun launched the Miraichou Project. This year, in addition to protecting the ptarmigans, the project also supports the maintenance of mountain trails. Well-maintained trails help gently separate human activity from wildlife habitats, reducing the strain on nature.
The funds raised will go toward protecting chicks, passing on breeding techniques, and preserving alpine plants. You can support the project starting from 3,000 yen and choose from rewards like patches, sweets, photo books, calendars, and collaborative items with outdoor brands — even plush toys! There’s a wide variety of ptarmigan-themed goodies. And of course, there’s also an option to donate the full amount without receiving a return gift.
Applications are open until September 25, 2025. Let’s ensure that the “gueh” call of the ptarmigan still echoes in the skies of Shinshu 100 years from now. See you next time!
