Hello everyone! Today, by popular request, we’re going to talk about the Java Sparrow (Buncho). This adorable little bird is loved by many for its charming appearance. Let’s explore the appeal of the Java Sparrow together!
The Java Sparrow is a small bird, measuring about 17 cm in length. Its striking appearance includes a black forehead and throat, contrasting with white cheeks. The upper body is a bluish-gray, while the lower body has a delicate pink hue, creating a beautiful and soothing color combination. There are many different varieties of Java Sparrows.

The Java Sparrow originates from Java and Bali in Indonesia. They thrive in expansive plains and agricultural areas at altitudes below 1,500 meters. In the wild, Java Sparrows primarily feed on plant seeds and small insects. They particularly enjoy wide grasslands and shrublands. Typically, they live in pairs or small flocks, but when food is plentiful, they gather in large numbers and soar through the sky. Witnessing a flock of Java Sparrows in flight must be a magnificent sight.
Java Sparrows were introduced to Japan around the early Edo period. Initially, they were enjoyed by the upper classes, but their cuteness soon captured the hearts of the general public. The famous ukiyo-e artist Hiroshige Utagawa created several works featuring Java Sparrows. Notably, Yatomi City in Aichi Prefecture is renowned as the “Town of Java Sparrows.” It is said that Java Sparrows spread from samurai residences in Nagoya during the Edo period, with the white Java Sparrow originating there and spreading nationwide. This history is still proudly shared by the locals.
Every year on October 24th, Japan celebrates “Java Sparrow Day.” This day was established to raise awareness and appreciation for the Java Sparrow. Did you learn something new about the Java Sparrow’s lesser-known episodes? I hope you now see why they are so beloved! Until next time, take care!
