Hello everyone! Have you heard of the striated heron? Let me share a little about the charm of this cute bird!
The striated heron is just a bit larger than a pigeon, measuring around 40 to 52 cm in length. With its blue-gray feathers and white vertical stripes, it has a cool and stylish appearance. The white lines along the edges of its wings resemble bamboo leaves, which is how it got its name. A long feather sticks out from the back of its head, giving it a distinctive look.

These birds live near rivers and ponds, and they are primarily active in the evening and at night. However, they sometimes move around energetically during the day, living quite a flexible lifestyle. They are often seen standing still by the water, sometimes in pairs, and sometimes leisurely by themselves. Their relaxed demeanor adds to their charm.
The striated heron even uses “bait” to catch fish! It drops small twigs or leaves onto the water’s surface, and when curious fish approach, it swiftly catches them. This fishing-like technique has been observed in places like Suizenji Jojuen Garden in Kumamoto. Isn’t it surprising to know that a bird can fish like this?
Next time you spot a striated heron standing by the water, try watching closely to see what it does next. Until next time!
