Hello, everyone! Are you familiar with the black and white bird that heralds the arrival of winter, the Smew, also affectionately known as the “Panda Duck”? This bird, with its adorable appearance, captivates many people.
In Japan, the Smew is cherished as a “winter bird”, frequently seen during this season.
The nickname “Panda Duck” comes from the male’s coloration, resembling a panda. Particularly, the black area under their eyes enhances their panda-like charm.
Males are about 45 cm long, slightly larger than the females who measure around 38 cm. Notably, in winter, the males don a beautiful black and white plumage that is not seen during the breeding season. Interestingly, the males have dark green feathers on the back of their heads, while the females have brown heads with white necks and grey bodies.
The Smew’s ecology is also quite intriguing. They inhabit freshwater areas like lakes and rivers, skillfully diving to catch small fish. They are agile in water and adept at locating prey.
However, the Smew is somewhat cautious by nature. They tend to flee when humans approach, but when they are preening, they are relatively still, presenting a perfect opportunity for observation.
