A Day in Okinawa with the Ryukyu Ruddy Kingfisher

Fun Facts

Hello everyone! Today, a friend asked me, “How is the Ryukyu Ruddy Kingfisher different from the ones in mainland Japan?” So, let’s shine a spotlight on the Ryukyu Ruddy Kingfisher.

The Ryukyu Ruddy Kingfisher is about 27 cm in length. Their body color is truly beautiful. They have deep purple on their wings and back, and striking sky-blue feathers on their rump. In contrast, the mainland Ruddy Kingfisher is more subdued, with a reddish-brown base color and not as much purple.

Their call is truly unique. In addition to the basic “kyororororo,” they also have a cute sound called “hokkaru.” When alarmed, they can also make a vigorous “kyokyokyokyokyo” sound, which is quite endearing.

In their habitat, you can often find them around streams, forests, and large trees in areas like Okinawa Prefecture and the Amami Islands, and even along riversides. Their diet is quite interesting; they eat insects, frogs, crabs, and near the coast, they also prey on hermit crabs.

The Ryukyu Ruddy Kingfisher stands out in the natural beauty of Okinawa. If you have the opportunity to visit, be sure to look for them. Meeting them, with their beautiful appearance and unique calls, is sure to be a memorable part of your trip. Until next time!
