The Japanese Murrelet, about the size of a Starling (approximately 24cm in length), has an appearance reminiscent of a penguin. Its chubby, adorable physique and relatively short wings are distinctive. These birds feature a striking contrast with black crown feathers and cheeks, and a white nape, creating a beautiful visual effect.<\/p>\n\n\n

Interestingly, the Japanese Murrelet is more adept at swimming than flying. With slightly rear-positioned legs, they swim through water like penguins, almost as if dancing beneath the sea’s surface. They spend most of their lives at sea, coming to land only for a short breeding season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, this charming bird faces the threat of extinction. Estimated to number around 5,000 to 6,000 in the seas near Japan, they are endangered by global warming and marine pollution, among other environmental issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
